Education Equity

For those looking to influence, support, or better understand the conversation in Education Equity - the time is NOW in Massachusetts.  Too often, I find that our political process happens quietly and the attention only comes when those opposing or supporting a bill see it get voted on... 

For months (and sometimes years) before a vote, however, the bills are in committee for discussion and revisions!  

Both of these equity bills, S365 and H584 (same wording in both) are currently in that spot right now!  The are in the Joint Committee for Education.  

If passed in their current form, they will create a commission to make recommendations  (not mandates) to School Committee's and Superintendents about changes to curriculum, fostering equity on the mtel (teacher exam) and creating resources for professional development with an equity focus.

They will also create a private/public trust fund for future investments in these areas.   (My summary) 

The bill is being discussed and tweaked so now is the time to speak your mind to our State Rep, David Linksy and to our Senators, Senate President Spilka and Senator Rausch....

Here are the remarks I gave last night when letting my committee know my decision to recuse:  After the School Committee meeting on October 15th, several individuals wrote into the SpeakUp Natick portal requesting that I recuse myself from voting on the possible closure of Johnson.  The substance of these messages, sent to the full committee, carried a familiar refrain. Evaluation Time

The School Committees of every community are charged with oversight for the budget, the policies and the evaluation of the superintendent for the districts they serve. Tonight, in Natick, we begin the Superintendent evaluation process.  Virtual Meeting Link - 6:00 p.m.    Background:  Page 2 of DESE Model system guide for Superintendent Evaluation These videos  and this PDF explain the 5 step Superintendent Evaluation Process that Natick is piloting with other communities.
